Get knitting for the Big Knit 2014

Raise money for Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees by getting involved with Age UK and innocent’s Big Knit campaign 2014. You can make a difference by knitting some mini hats to help us keep older people warm in winter.

Innocent Drinks will be running their ‘Big Knit’ bobble hat project again this year. Each year the project has grown bigger and hats are sold nationwide.

Innocent Drinks bottles will be displayed in chill cabinets in Sainsbury’s stores wearing your little bobble hats to attract customers’ attention and increase sales.

And the good news is that for every bottle sold Innocent Drinks will donate 25p to Age UK to help us provide services for vulnerable older people this winter.

The deadline for the receipt of all the hats is 7th November 2014.

Whilst it is important that your hat meets the quality control requirements to fit the bottles, you can be as imaginative as you like in making your hats. Just follow the base pattern for size and make the rest up yourself.

Quality Control

It is very important that your finished hat fits the Innocent Drinks bottles as hats of the wrong size will not be used.

The quality control rules are very simple:

  • The hat must fit comfortably over the lid and lip of the Innocent Drinks bottle. Your local Age UK will have some of these for checking your hats fit before sending them on
  • The hat should have a ‘topper’. This can be a bobble, button, ribbon, bow or tassel securely sewn or glued to the top of the hat. Use any topper you like – just use your imagination – but remember to make them secure so little children can’t pull them off easily.
  • Before stitching your hat, it should roughly measure 1 ½ inches by 4 ¼ inches (4cm by 11.5 cm) which is important for it to fit the top of the bottles (see the knitting pattern)

Innocent Drinks have a very short shelf life and the hats will be manually put on to the bottles by patient Innocent workers. We need to ensure that the hats will go on easily to enable them to get them on and get them despatched quickly.

Get your hats, and yourslef, noticed!

The best hats will be featured in the window of the Choices Centre, Woolshops, Halifax and also here on the Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees website.

Where to send your finished hats

Your finished hats should be sent to the Choices Centre, 4-6 The Square, Woolshops, Halifax, HX1 1RJ, where they will be quality checked, and then forwarded to Innocent Drinks.

Each time you send in your hats you should send in a completed knitted hats form so we know who has helped us. We need these so we can be sure to thank you for your efforts, which is important to us. You can send more than one hat with your form as long as you tell us how many hats you have sent to us.

If you have already sent some hats in and need a new form because you want to do more, or want more knitting patterns because your friends want to help, then you can contact either the Choices Centre on 01422 399830 and they will send one to you.

Best Hat for Age UK Calderdale and Kiklees

Age UK Calderdale & Kirklees will give a prize to the best hat they receive this year, which will be judged after this year’s closing date. Details of the prize winner will be given at a later date and published here on our website.

Can’t knit but still want to help?

If you don’t want to, or can’t knit, you might still be able to help us. This year we are also accepting donations towards the project. The money raised will be used wisely to help older people who are in need – from helping with fuel poverty to assisting us to provide our very varied but much needed services.

You can either donate through our Choices Centre at Woolshops, Halifax or by sending a cheque to Choices Centre.

Thank you very much, and happy knitting!
