Ryburn Valley High School – Older People’s Activities – What’s on and how to get involved

Activities for over 50s at Ryburn Valley High School
For the past 3 years, we have been sharing our school facilities with older people from the local community.

If you need transport to school from Sowerby Bridge, we are now able to use the Elim Church Mini bus for some activities. For a small charge we may be able to pick you up from a central point in Sowerby Bridge and return you to that place after the activity. To book a place on any activity, for transport, or for more information. Please contact
Karen Allen, tel: 01422 832070, or email V@ryburn.calderdale.sch.uk
Film Club – FREE!
Once every half term we show a DVD on our large screen and serve tea and cakes to older members of our community. We have shown a variety of films including ‘Calamity Jane’ and ‘The King’s Speech’. The activity is very popular and our next film on Weds 29th Feb is ‘The Pajama Game’, starring Doris Day. Doors open at 12.30pm for tea and cakes (bring your own sandwiches if you wish) and film starts at 1.30pm.

Photography Club- FREE!
Run by professional Photographer Bob Collier, our club is now in it’s 5th season. People who have never used a camera before, or those who want to improve their skills, work with Bob both in school and on location to develop their technique.
This Club is very popular and is on Tuesday afternoons 1.30pm-3.30pm for 6 weeks. Bring your own camera and Bob will show you how to take great photos, and use our school computers to improve your Images. Beginners or experienced snappers welcome!
Next club starts Tuesday 17th April.

IT Club – FREE!
Also in it’s 5th season our older people have learned how to use the internet, trace their family tree and create greetings cards. We don’t have a set programme, so if you want to learn how to do something come along and our helpful student volunteers will do their best to support you.
The Club runs for 6 weeks on Fridays 2.30-3.30pm and the next one starts on Friday 24th February.

Intergenerational Learning
We try to encourage our students to work with older people on projects so we are always on the lookout for people with interesting stories to share with our children. If you’d like to be involved in a project of this kind please contact us!

School Plays, Concerts and Performances
If you like going to see live events why not come and see our school Productions? Our matinee performance of ‘Bugsy Malone’ is on Tuesday 21st Feb at 1.30pm. It’s FREE! – Please book in advance as places are limited.

Reminder – ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ at Ryburn Valley High School

Miracle on 34th Street (in Sowerby Bridge!)

One for the diary: the popular film club at Ryburn Valley High School are showing Miracle on 34th Street starring Richard Attenborough on the 14th December. The club is free and open to all over 50.

A little girl discovers dreams do come true if you really believe. Six-year-old Susan has doubts about childhood’s most enduring miracle – Santa Claus. Her mother told her the “secret” about Santa a long time ago, so Susan doesn’t expect to receive the most important gifts on her Christmas list. But after meeting a special department store Santa who’s convinced he’s the real thing, Susan is given the most precious gift of all – something to believe in.

Exciting offer from Square Chapel

Square Chapel Centre for the Arts in Halifax is looking for a wide range of people, preferably interested in theatre, cinema or cafes to attend a focus group session on Wednesday 21st September at 6.30pm at Square Chapel. The session will last for one and a half hours and they are looking for people who have never been to Square Chapel before.
They will offer every participant two free tickets to a show of their choice at Square Chapel and two free drinks in the interval as a thank you for their time.
In the session the group will discuss Square Chapel and its plans for the future, which includes an extension for a cinema and a cafe. They will be interested to know if the new facilities will be something that would interest the group and how they would see it fitting into the Halifax town centre.
The session will be run by an external company called &Co.
If you are interested in taking part or just want to know more then contact Suzanne on 01422 353073 or email suzanne@squarechapel.co.uk
