Growing together at Threeways

Threeways-logo-1-300x78

A new exciting project encompassing food growing and all aspects of gardening has been launched at Three Ways.

This project will bring interested members of the community together to share ideas and tasks to transform the grow site into a productive and creative space. A wide range of plants will be grown for food and attracting beneficial wildlife to create a stimulating and inspiring environment. This will transform a former underused grassed area of little community interest into a valued resource managed by the community for the community.

With the fantastic support from Lloyds Bank, existing volunteers and local people the site has already been transformed.

3 ways polytunnelTwo plastic tunnels are in the works which will provide dry spaces protected from the great Pennine weather to grow delicate plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers and raise seedlings.

20 timber framed raised beds have been installed together with a rain water  collection system for watering plants.

3 ways veg beds

To provide on going support with all aspects of the development of the project and to work alongside local people a facilitator (Debs) has been appointed on a part time basis for 12 months.

if you have an interest in gardening, food, fresh air, exercise, would like the chance to get a little fitter, an opportunity to do something different, something social, learn some new skills or just want an excuse to get out of the house… Then this initiative could be right up your street.

All interested people can contact debs by email: debs@3ways.org.uk

The site will be open Mondays and Thursdays 10 am till 3pm every week for now. It is hoped that further funding can be obtained to extend the opening hours of the site to include weekends.

No appointments are necessary just turn up on either Monday or Thursday.

As this is a community resource it will be open to the public on designated days. This means that anyone can come to the site on these days and have a look around. We will publicise these public open days soon.

Council budget consultation

One consultation which is going to affect everyone in Calderdale concerns the council’s budget. Here’s the information from the council website:

To make difficult decisions to achieve our savings for the next 3 years, we will:

  • need to change the way we provide some services
  • respond to population changes, for example more people needing care in later life and more children requiring intensive support
  • have to charge more to maintain some services
  • have to stop doing some things
  • consider how our decisions can support jobs and economic growth
  • identify how our decisions affect our communities.

Let us know what you think

Should we:

  • Maintain our approach to putting the needs of the most vulnerable people first
  • For some services increase charges for people who use them
  • Widen the role of local community groups and volunteers in running services
  • Stop providing some services.

Click here to complete the survey and stand up for the services you believe in.
