Inn Churches Project

 

Regular Volunteer Help Needed!

As we approach Christmas and the weather is getting colder, an Inn Churches Project is going to run this winter.
Training for volunteers is on Tuesday 12th January, 2014 at 7pm at Salvation Army Halifax, St James Road, Halifax, HX1 1YS.
The purpose of the Inn Churches Project is to provide night shelter 7 nights per week between 3rd January and 3rd March overnight between 6pm and 7am, for those who are homeless.
A number of volunteer roles would help with the smooth running and success of the project including; Chef/Cook, Be-friender, team leader.
Full training is provided and the next training session is being held on Tuesday 12 January, 2014 at 7pm at Salvation Army Halifax, St James Road, Halifax, HX1 1YS.

Free money management course

A FREE course from Noah’s Ark Centre, Ovenden, produced in association with Credit Action.

This free four-week course will enable you to manage your money, learn how to budget, increase income/reduce spending, save and borrow sensibly, and deal with debt. Following the course, there’ll be a session on the new benefit rules from Pennine Housing, information about bank accounts from Credit Union, and you will be able to access the internet to let you compare energy deals and/or check your benefit entitlement.

Affordable Warmth for Calderdale Residents

Calderdale Council’s Housing Energy Action Team can help with heating repairs and boiler replacements for people on low incomes who privately rent or own their own homes. Help and advice is available, along with financial assistance for qualifying households. Subsidised insulation is also available to help residents over 60 years old make their homes warmer and more comfortable. (Funding and any work are both subject to application and survey). Safe and Warm Calderdale – keeping your home warm this winter

Safe and Warm Calderdale (formerly Warm Homes, Healthy People) will launch at a FREE event on Friday 2 November.

The project offers home fire safety visits and advice on energy saving and how to claim benefits you may be entitled to.

During the winter months (November to March), further help is available, including winter warmth packs, food packs and falls prevention measures such as ice shoes and car care kits.

Debt, benefits, housing and employment advice

Citizens Advice Bureau is starting a new advice drop-in at Keighley Road Surgery, Illingworth for patients on a Tuesday morning, 9.30am – 12.30pm.

By appointment only, please ring the surgery on 0844 477 3417 or ask at reception.

Help making your home greener

Green Doctor is a free service provided by Groundwork to help tackle fuel poverty.

The Green Doctor service involves a friendly home visit to assess your energy use, helping to identify how you could be using less and saving money. It could save you up to £110 per year or more on your energy bills.

  •  Are you on a low household income of less than £16,160 a year?
  • Do you receive income or disability related benefits?
  • Do you receive state pension credit?
  • Do you receive tax credits and have children under 16 living at home?

If you can answer yes to any of these questions and live in or privately rent your own home in Calderdale, the Green Doctor home energy health check is for you.  All of the following are available free of charge:

  • Energy efficiency advice
  • Draught proofing, tank jackets and radiator reflector panels supplied and fitted
  • A home energy information pack
  • Details of the insulation and heating grants available for owners and private tenants
  • Access to advice on fuel debt, supplier switching and payment options

Help making your home safe and warm

The Council’s Home Improvement Service is launching a new project to reduce health hazards in the home and improve the energy efficiency, heating and safety of privately owned and rented homes in Calderdale.

Depending on the householder’s circumstances, they may apply for:

  • Hand rails or banisters where one doesn’t already exist
  • second stair rails
  • additional internal grab rails
  • key safes
  • free and discounted loft and cavity wall fibre insulation
  • advice about reducing fuel bills
  • low cost financial assistance for heating systems and other forms of insulation
