Making the right moves to beat Parkinson’s Disease in Calderdale
Local people will be marking Parkinson’s Awareness Week (PAW) with a unique celebration of dance, movement and live music.
The Halifax and District Branch of Parkinson’s UK is inviting anyone affected by Parkinson’s, along with family, friends and carers, to a Dance Taster this Saturday (13 April). A pilot project to explore the physical and emotional benefits of moving to music begins the following Thursday (18 April), right in the middle of PAW.
Community dance worker Natalie Speake says there’s never been anything like it in the region before for people affected by Parkinson’s Disease.
“This is something of a first for Calderdale and the fact it is happening is wonderful news for anyone affected by Parkinson’s in the region. A growing body of research is showing that dance can help people with Parkinson’s in lots of ways. Greater ease in moving, increases confidence and – just as important – can be a lot of fun.”
Natalie says no previous experience is necessary. All you need to bring with you to any of the sessions is a willingness to move.
The project is part of a wider initiative with Local Arts Company Verd de Gris called Changing landscapes which aims to develop and deliver uplifting and creative sessions for older people across Calderdale. The project has received active support from the Halifax and District Branch of Parkinson’s UK and is funded partly by NHS Calderdale and South West Yorkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
“It is hoped that we will be able to make this something very special so that it will carry on into the future and continue to bring a better quality of life to those affected by Parkinson’s.”
The Dance Taster will start at 2pm on Saturday 13 April at Elim Church Hall, Hall Street, Halifax.
The 10 week pilot project sessions will run weekly from Thursday 18 April at the New Town Hall in Hebden Bridge, 11am-12.30pm.
For further information or comment Natalie Speake can be contacted on 077 2345 2673.

Keeping fit outdoors is now a walk in the park thanks to a new outdoor gym at Manor Heath Park. The facility offers free, all-year access to fitness equipment within a public environment for people of a wide range of ages and abilities. The new outdoor gym equipment includes items that assist people with tai chi, pull ups, abdominal exercises, tricep dips, stretches, chest press and lateral pull downs.
The facility was officially opened on Friday 16th December by the Mayor of Calderdale, Cllr Nader Fekri, and Irene Clarke, a member of the Council’s Upbeat scheme who is recovering from a stroke and with the help of Upbeat, has improved her health and general wellbeing significantly. The Upbeat team, who help people who have been referred to their 10 week exercise programme to live a healthier lifestyle, were on hand at the opening to demonstrate how to use the equipment. The equipment is located in Manor Heath Park, opposite the children’s play area, next to the Flutterbites Café.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for Communities, Cllr Pauline Nash, said:
“The outdoor gym is a welcome addition to the wide variety of facilities available at Manor Heath Park.
The outdoor gym has been funded through the Healthy Towns Programme, which aims to make Halifax a healthy town through regeneration, inclusion and fun”.
Director of Public Health for Calderdale, Dr Graham Wardman, said:
“Our aim with the outdoor gym is to encourage more people to get out in their local area and moving more. It’s something new and a good starting point for those who want to get fit. Being based in the local community should make it easier to access and people can use the facilities when they’re out walking the dog or playing with their children”.
21st December 2011: Illingworth and Bradshaw Neighbourhood Scheme have launched their new year programme. There’s something for everyone, with a new chess class and board games club, table tennis and new-look keep fit, as well as old favourites including Tai Chi, painting and of course the popular Crafty Club. New people are always given a warm welcome, so don’t be shy, try something new! Materials are provided.

A Keep Fit class for people over 50 will be starting in Illingworth at the end of September as part of the local Neighbourhood Scheme programme. After taster sessions proved really popular, eight further weeks have been organised to see how the class goes in the longer term.
Fridays 10 – 11
Whitehill School, Occupation Lane, Illingworth
£2.50 per session. Tea and coffee at 11 (served by the pupils!)
Starts Friday 23rd September and running til 25th November
School closed for half term 28th Oct and 4th Nov.
Please note, this will be in the lower hall – the entrance is at the lower end of the school (not the upper end where some of you have been coming to classes so far). There is a visitors’ car park which you can use. Come through the lower gates and the entrance is the double doors straight ahead of you.
The classes are aimed at a wide range of abilities and are gently aerobic in nature – the instructor will offer you options to ensure that you exercise as gently or as hard as you prefer. Please ensure that you consult your doctor if you are aware of any condition or other reason that exercise may pose a risk to your health.

Our new scheme for South Asian Ladies (SALs) is taking a break for Ramadam. After a hectic schedule of ‘gentle’ exercise, crochet, Wii Fit and needlework, our ladies have more important things to concentrate on during August. But, we will back (where have I heard that before) in early September, with a late celebration for Eid and the activities starting a week later. Watch this space for further details.
